Legal awareness, sometimes called public legal education or legal literacy, is the empowerment of individuals regarding issues involving legal aspects. Legal awareness helps to promote consciousness of legal culture, participation in the formation of laws and the rule of law. The Assam State Legal Services Authority along with District Legal Service Authorities conduct various legal awareness activities to make people aware of their rights and duties as well as the role, functions and activities of Legal Services Institutions. Various means like seminars, lectures, pamphlet distribution, participation in Doordarshan programs, floating mobile vans to spread awareness through public communication, nukkad-natak, short documentaries, cultural programs for school children on legal subjects, various competitions such as painting, essay writing, debate and recitation etc. on legal subjects are used to achieve this goal. Statutory literacy programs address specific topics that vary according to the needs of the place and its people. Internship programs are organized for law students to promote the role and importance of legal services. Legal aid clinics also operate in law schools as well as in other suitable places to further the achievement of legal service goals. In addition to that, Legal Literacy Clubs are also established in school and college level for creating awareness amongst students at regular intervals.
