Famous British Writer George Eliot once quoted, “It is never too late to be what you might have been”. The concept of self-respect is indeed a fundamental aspect of human psychology, and  it is often considered an inherent part of an individual’s dignity and worth. Regardless of a person’s past actions or current circumstances, the basic permise is that every individual has a fundamental right to be treated with respect and to maintain a sense of self-worth. Even individuals in jail, prison, or correctional home who might have committed offence(s) and are serving sentences, still deserve basic human dignity. There is evidence to suggest that providing constructive and purposeful activities for prisoners can have positive effects on their mental well-being and behavior which as a result is beneficial for the society as a whole. Engaging them in certain types of creative or productive work by providing them with the necessary training, can contribute to rehabilitation efforts in true sense and also enlighten their minds. These activities may help prisoners acquire new skills, boost self-esteem, and provide a sense of purpose. It also inculcates within them a sense of confidence and positivity.

With this aim in mind, the District Legal Services Authority, Tinsukia and the authority of District Jail, Tinsukia established a platform i.e., KARAHAAT, through which the inmates of District Jail, Tinsukia and Sadiya are provided training in manufacturing handicraft items (bamboo, cane, wood, plastic etc) and thereafter those products are displayed for exhibition cum sale. “KARAHAAT” was formally inaugurated on 02-09-2023 by the prisoners in presence of Sri Dipankar Bora, AJS, Hon’ble District & Sessions Judge cum Chairman, DLSA, Tinsukia, Sri Forhan Uddin Choudhury, AJS, Secretary, DLSA, Tinsukia, learned Judicial Officers of Tinsukia District Judiciary, learned members of Tinsukia Bar Association, staff members of District Judiciary Tinsukia, litigants and general public. The initial fund was raised from the voluntary contributions of the judicial officers, some members of the Tinsukia Bar and members of the Office Staff. The financial gain made through the sale of these products is entirely used for the welfare of the prisoners and a part of the profit is offered to the prisoners engaged in producing these handicrafts.

As on 25/02/2025, a total of 08 jail inmates have voluntarily engaged themselves in manufacturing various articles. Out of the 08 inmates, some were already trained and some are being provided training inside the jail.
